The Gokstad benches are carved by hand from Scottish Lime. The surface design intensifies the hypnotic beauty of wooden hull ships with riven hand axe worked surfaces.
The simple design references the huge structural strength and elegance of the Gokstad ships, the hewn planks, the depth and shades of black, light as liquid on it’s surfaces, embodying the northern aesthetic.
We present a pair of unique benches made with rare Burr Lime wood. The surface is hand carved using both axe and chisel. When carved, the Lime wood recreates the shiny surfaces of the ancient Gokstad hull, and it’s interaction with water.
The benches explore the sculptural qualities of Scottish wood with hand worked surfaces, and the interface with water, encapsulated in Japanese words such as Kawaakari and Yugen.
Kawaakari, “The gleam of last light on a river’s surface at dusk; the glow of a river in darkness.” and Yugen “The yuugen indicates an incomprehensible depth and the hidden beauty, the charm of things in the dim light that you can not fully understand."
The Hownam Studio icon is embedded at the rear of each seat base.

The entire upper surfaces are carved by hand over weeks. This creates a hewn and riven surface that reflects light on the surface and edges, creating a feeling of movement and grace.
